Full Description

In 1995 an excavation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology along a pipeline between Deal and Ramsgate, at Sandwich Bay. One feature was a pit containing Belgic sherds, animal bone and shell. There was also a midden-like layer which contains fragments of human lower limbs. These may be from the Roman inhumation close by or part of a second inhumation which was disturbed nearby. A second feature is also present though no clues to what it may be were given and only Roman sherds were present to aid dating, all of these sherds date to the 2nd century. (1)
