Full Description

In 2000 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation at Hartsdown Road. A layer of metalling consisting of flint pebbles associated with Belgic and Roman pottery was found. It is likely to be a trackway. (1)

The site has been partially excavated by The Trust of Thanet Archaeology: Evaluation work carried out in 1995 at Hartsdown Community Woodland Scheme, Margate. This dated the trackway to the Roman period. This is clearly identifiable as a length of Roman metalled trackway. It consists of a layer of metalling composed of small water-worn flint cob bles about 4 m. wide and 0.20 m. deep where best preserved, this laid in a shallow chalk-cut slot. This is flanked on both sides by parallel chalk-cut ditches about 4 m. wide and 1 m. deep. (1)

The cropmark remains of a short stretch of double-ditched trackway running parallel to the Hartsdown Road is visible on aerial photographs: CUCAP BTG83 26-JUN-1975. About 100m of the trackway is visible aligned NW-SE with the ditches set 7m apart, widening to 14m apart towards the SE end of this section. The NW end disappears beneath housing. This trackway has been mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. (2)
