Full Description

In 1998 Archaeology South-East carried out an excavation on the former Hawkinge Aerodrome. A group of Late Iron Age features were found, including pits and post holes. The largest feature was a pit with a diameter of over 5m and a depth of 0.85m. It contained a very large quantity of unabraded Late Iron Age pottery, metalwork, fired clay objects and a number of potin coins. Elsewhere on the site, remains of two placed vessels were found. Each was in a pit, one consisted of only the rim as the vessel had been inverted and subsequently damaged by ploughing. (1)
