Full Description

In 2003 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation at Westwood Cross. A sparse scatter of features was found, including pits, gullies, post holes and shallow linear features of uncertain function. Struck flints and pottery suggested a later prehistoric date but this could not be confirmed. It is likely that the features are indicative of activity in the area with settlement nearby. (1)

during a later stip map and sample excavation across the site, a series of later prehistoric features were widely spread across the excavation area. This activity has been loosely dated to the Later Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age period, through the sparse pottery retrieved from these features, though this dating is not conclusive. The most substantial features which have been dated to this period were two large cess pits found in area D. These features were circular in shape with vertical sides
and flat bases. The largest of these pits was 1.80 m. in diameter and 1.34 m. deep, the smaller one was 1.75 m. in diameter with a depth of 1.10 m. the finds from the pits included several fragments of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age pottery, along with mussel, oyster, whelk, peppery furrow and cockle shell, fragments of animal bone including cattle skull fragments and teeth, charcoal, barley and emmer wheat grains, chaff, hazelnut shell and weed seeds. Alongside these cess pits, other pit features were seen and a short length of ditch which may represent the remnants of a field boundary. (information summarised from source) (2-3)
