Summary

Cropmarks of enclosures and pits were identified from aerial photographs. An evaluation of these features in 1995 found evidence of at least two large pits containing late Iron Age - belgic pottery.

Full Description

TR 345694. Cropmarks of enclosures and pits. Cropmarks show rectangular ditched enclosures and pits on slope of the hill side. (1)

A rectangular enclosure, 35m x 45m, situated near the bottom of the valley. Internally it holds at least two large pits, over 5m dia, containing late iron age, Belgic pottery.(2,3)

Two bronze fragments, probably from a late Bronze Age hoard were found during field walking. (1)

Cropmarks of an incomplete rectilinear enclosure and pits visible on aerial photographs: Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021 and CUCAP ALA56 04-JUN-1965. The site appears as the northern portion of a rectilinear enclosure with one complete and two partial sides and two slightly curved corners. It measures 40.5m across and at least 40m at its longer (eastern) incomplete side which has a gap/entrance midway. Within the enclosure are two pits.This site was mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024 (4-5).
