Full Description
In 2007 Archaeology South-East carried out an evaluation. Roman material was recovered, though little of it was from features that dated from the period, most likely due to heavy disturbance of the site in the medieval and more recent periods. A probable ditch contained a Colchester type brooch. Late Iron Age or early Roman pottery and a number of chicken bones were found in one layer with post holes but the interpretation of this feature is unclear. It was suggested that it could be a sunken featured building of Anglo-Saxon date and the Roman material therefore only residual. Three 4th century coins were found in the garden soil overlying the area. (1)
Roman British domestic refuse was found during the excavation of the medieval hospital to the south in the 1960s (see TQ 76 NW 66).
