Full Description

In 2010 Kent Archaeological Projects monitored the topsoil stripping along the route of a new water pipeline. A large Roman quarry (TQ 85 NW 263) was backfilled in the medieval period, AD c.1150-c.1350, presumably to level the area for agricultural use. The pit was finally sealed with a chalk block layer forming a floor-like capping. Other medieval activity on the site consisted of pits, gullies and ditches, often intercutting. Many of the pits are likely to have been for marl extraction, though they were backfilled with domestic refuse from presumably nearby occupation. A group of undated postholes nearby could relate to a structure. (1)
