In 2009/10 Archaeology South-East carried out a programme of works on Kemsley Down and Kemsley Marsh. Three phases of enclosure were found, all dating from the Late Iron Age through to early Roman period. They relate to a probable farmstead located to the east of the excavated area, representing the edges of the occupied area and an associated field system. The settlement was located on the slope of Kemsley Down with views over Milton Creek and out to the Isle of Sheppey. Pottery from the earliest phase of the enclosures dated from 100BC through to AD 60. Environmental samples from the ditches suggested crop processing in the vicinity. Pits were dug for domestic refuse disposal. The second phase of the enclosure ditches dated to AD 50-80. A post hole was found in the base of this ditch, perhaps relating to a fence along the base or revetment to support this ditch sides. The third phase was of similar date but also saw extension of the ditching to the north. The site appears to have gone out of use after this phase, or relocated further to the east. The only activity from later in the Roman period were a number of pits, though there was a cremation cemtery further to the north (TQ 96 NW 128) and a salt hearth to the south (TQ 96 NW 129). (1)
