Full Description

In 2008 Pre-Construct Archaeology conducted a programme of works at the Friars School, Great Chart. Two features were identified in Area 1 as being of Late Iron Age/early Roman date. The larger of these was possibly a clay extraction pit and both perhaps belong to an area of activity extended to the northwest beyond the limits of the excavated area. Slag was recovered from one of the pits and is evidence of Late Iron Age iron smelting in the area. Pottery from the features dated to the period 50 BC to AD 70. (1)
