Full Description
In 2004 Archaeology South East carried out an evaluation of land at Barnhurst Lane, Hawkinge. A concrete structure was found in one trench. It consisted of two circles of reinforced concrete connected by a short passage. The structure had been backfilled with brick and concrete rubble. It was set into the ground, the structure surviving to a height of c.1m. It was painted internally with standard RAF wartime 'duck green' paint. The southernmost chamber had a ring of bolts in the centre. A live .303 round was found in a drain and a spent round was also found. The structure is of a type not previously recorded at Hawkinge but is most likely part of the wartime defences of the airfield. (1)
No structure is visible on aerial photos of 1945/6 and the area appears largely undisturbed. It may be that the site had already been cleared by this date, or that it is a post-war feature, though nothing is visible on aerial photos of 1961.
