Full Description
In 1916, gravel-digging at Mr. Martin's pit, Stone (opposite Acacia Road, west of Horns Cross) frequently revealed calcined flint, potsherds, and the usual bone, charcoal, shell and wood-ash; evidence associated with hearth-sites, pit dwellings or occupation trenches. Most of the discoveries were seen near the surface on clearing away the turf. In all about twenty vessels were found and they seem to represent a collection of typical native pottery of the Early Romano-British period about the 1st Cent.A.D. (1) Site pointed out to me by S. Priest, Curator, Dartford Borough Museum and centred at TQ 5707 7438. Potsherds from this site to be seen in Dartford Museum and are mainly Upchurch ware. (2)
