Full Description
[TR 34306515]. Sited from plan Traces of Iron Age settlement were uncovered during the construction of the Monkton Gas Pipeline in 1984. For about 20m, the pipe trench sectioned a buried horizon, and pits cut into the natural chalk, yielding a profusion of late Iron Age/Belgic sherds, animal bone, shells etc. (see illustration card). These late Iron Age/Belgic remains are suprising in terms of area and density, suggesting heavy and continuous settlement. (1) TR 34156510. An Iron Age/Belgic site was encountered here during the laying of the Monkton-Ramsgate gas pipe line in 1984. The pipe trench cut through a number of pits and a buried horizon containing Late IA/Belgic material. A similar but larger site was also encountered some 800m to the west above Thorne Farm. (2)
