Full Description
A cartload of pottery, some of it Roman, coins of the Hadrianic period, and bones were found in 1921 in making a new road to join the Pegwell Road at West Cliff near Ramsgate. V-shaped ditches, some surrounding roughly square enclosures, perhaps for cattle, were openedup and yielded three bronze coins of Vespasian and Trajan and one of Hadrian, Upchurch ware and bones. A denehole contained Roman potsherds, charcoal and iron implements. 1923 finds sited on local information to TR 3706 6421. Road construction in 1922 and 1923 in thearea produced more Roman pottery, mostly C1st. (1-3) A map in Ramsgate Public Library shows the site of the 1922-3 finds atTR 3697 6448, which is confirmed by an entry in Maidstone Museum Gazetteer. Maidstone Museum 6 inch also notes pits containing much Roman pottery period 25/2/1922 at TR 3703 6450. The three sitings havebeen letters 'A' (Crawford), 'B' (Ramsgate Library map) and 'C' (Maidstone Museum 6 inch) on the record sheet. The 1921 siting could not be identified with any accuracy, and nothing is known of Crawford's siting at Maidstone Museum. The area was being developed from 1921 onwards, and is now built over. A selection of the pottery found 1922 is on exhibition in Ramsgate Public Library. (4) In 1921 a cartload of pottery was moved from St Mildred's Road and shallow ditches enclosing a roughly square enclosure with coins of Vespasian and Hadrian were found. (5) TR 370 642, TR 370 645 Romano-British remains Site no 179, 180. (6) TR 3713 6421 and TR 370 645 An extensive Romano-British settlement site was excavated here early this century. Most of the finds dated from the C1st. The first group of pottery unearthed consisted of a tall urn of Celtic type 11.75 inches high with two under-developed cordons; a southern Gaulish plate, Drag. form 31, which was well preserved and stamped DAGMARVS; a small soft paste cup and bottle. Thesecond group contained a tall urn of similar shape to the first, 10.75inches high, with two well-developed cordons around the bulge and distinctly Celtic in character. The band between the cordons was 2 inches in width and decorated with a lightly incised pattern. Below the bulge was a decoration of imperfect chevrons. A plate, Drag. form 18, accompanied the tall urn but was badly broken. The name PATRICVS is stamped on the plate. Other finds in the second group were a cup and a small bottle. The latter was not round but very compressed in shape 5.75 inches high, 7.5 inches diameter. Other vessels found were a small cup, some Upchurch ware, a red plate, an urn, a variety of PROBADIS Castor ware and two buff bottles. A considerable quantity of bone was also discovered, including those of ox, sheep, horse and pig.Remains of birds were also present as well as shells of molluscs. (7) Roman pottery and midden material were found here in 1870. Finds include pots, Upchurch patera, cinerary urns containing burnt bones, bronze fibulae. (8)
