Full Description

In 2006 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an evaluation. Sections of a ring ditch were found. The internal space was c. 24m across. It is likely to be a Bronze Age round barrow. (1)

In 2006 Archaeology South-East carried out an excavation. The barrow had a penannular ring ditch with a narrow causeway on the west side. The ditch had an average width of c.4m and a depth of 1.58m with an internal diameter of c.22.5m. It is unclear when this monument was constructed. Pottery from the ring ditch was clearly later in date (Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and some Late Iron Age and Roman material). Worked flint from the ditch contained some Early Neolithic material and some Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. The Early Neolithic material is probably residual but the significance of the later worked flints is uncertain. A central pit was found but contained no finds. Seven other pits were found within the barrow. These were mostly within the southeast quadrant of the circle. The only finds were a few undiagnostic flint flakes. A number of post holes were also found but could not be dated or certainly connected with the barrow. (2)

The ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on MAL/82029 V 183 21-AUG-1982. The feature was mapped as part of the Thanet Lansdscape Mpping Project. (3)
