Full Description

In 2007 Oxford Archaeology carried out a strip, map and sample excavation. In the central part of the area a Bronze Age enclosed settlement was found. This consisted of a ditched enclosure with an entranceway to the southwest. The ditch was up to 2m wide and 1.4m deep. Early Bronze Age sherds were found in the secondary fills of the ditch, with Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age material from the upper fill. The Early Bronze Age pottery could be residual. OSL (Optically Stimulated Luminescence) dating gave a date for the lowest fill of 1780-1300 BC, 2180-1600 BC for the middle fills and 1580-510 BC for the upper fills. The site is therefore likely to be of Middle to Late Bronze Age date. Within the enclosure, three clusters of post holes may indicate structures, these included a possible round house, a fence line and what could be two-post drying rack-type structures. A very large post hole was located just inside the entrance, with a ramp on one side. This suggests a very large post was erected in this feature. There were numerous pits within the enclosure. Some of these were dated to the Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age, and therefore either represent the earliest phase of activity or an earlier phase unrelated to the later enclosure. (1)
