Summary

Cropmark of possible Bronze Age barrow or Neolithic long barrow indicated by an incomplete large oval enclosure surrounded by a ditch. Inside the enclosing ditch is the ploughed out remains of an inner mound, visible on photographs as a light coloured cropmark. Inside the enclosure, at its south west end is a small ring ditch 12m across with a single central pit. This feature is probably the plough levelled remains of an oval barrow, possibly of Bronze Age date.

Full Description

TR 359 649 Cropmark of barrows Cropmark indicates a group of three ploughed off Bronze Age barrows. (1)

An incomplete oval enclosure 30m by 21m in size and surrounded by a ditch up to 2m wide. Inside the enclosing ditch is the ploughed out remains of an inner mound, visible on the photographs as a light coloured cropmark. Inside the enclosure, at its s-w end is a small ring ditch 12m across with a single central pit. This feature is probably the plough levelled remains of an oval barrow, possibly of Bronze Age date.(2)

The oval enclosure (possibly a Neolithic long barrow),barrow mound and inner ring ditch described above were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. The cropmark traces of the inner mound and outer oval enclosure were recorded from aerial photographs (MAL28/78 148 21-AUG-1978) previously as part of the Historic England Ramsgate HAZ project. Recent Google Earth images (EARTH.GOOGLE.COM 2023 ACCESSED 18-12-2023) have revealed the presence of the inner round ring ditch located in the south-western end of the oval enlosure. (3-4).
