Full Description

In 1998 Museum of London Archaeology Service carried out an excavation as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project. A large enclosure. 47m wide and 55m long, formed by a penannular ditch with an entrance on the north-eastern side. Post holes either side of the entrance probably formed a gateway. The interior of the enclosure was subdivided by further ditches. A post structure of undetermined function was within the enclosure. The enclosure itself was probably used for animals, probably in the 12th century.

In the 13th century the enclosure was heavily modified and extended. A working hollow or sunken-floored building with an oven in the centre occupied the north western corner of the enclosure. A few rubbish pits were also located though they contained little in the way of finds. (1-3)
