Monument record TR 36 NE 579 - Late Bronze Age enclosure and pits, Manston Road, Ramsgate

Summary

A short section of enclosure ditch plus four pits, one of which contained an intact vessel, was uncovered during an archaeological excavation on land off Manston Road. A near-complete vessel was also found in the enclosure ditch. The pottery was datable to the Late Bronze Age and was discovered alongside flintwork of the same date. The quantity of the finds suggests further Late Bronze Age activity in the vicinity of these features. (location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information)

Full Description

Archaeology South-East carried out an evaluation in 2007. Features were recorded in four trenches: 3, 5, 11 and 13 which comprised of four shallow linear features, a probable pit and several small intercutting features. Only single linear features were recorded in trenches 11 and 1; two linear features were recorded in trench 5. Worked flint of probable Bronze Age date was found. (1)

In 2007-8 Archaeology South-East carried out a strip, map and sample excavation of the site. A large V-shaped ditch was found, forming the north-western portion of an enclosure. The ditch was up to 1.4m wide and 1.9m deep. A near-complete Late Bronze Age vessel was found and Early Iron Age pottery was recovered from the upper fills of the ditch. The ditch did not form a full enclosure, terminals being found at either end. It is not clear what function it therefore served. It is possibly the foundation of an unfinished enclosure or the north-eastern boundary of an enclosed area otherwise delineated by banks, hedges and/or fencing. It appears from the dating evidence that the ditch was constructed at the beginning of or before the Late Bronze Age. The quantity of finds from the ditch suggests that although there was no further evidence for Late Bronze Age settlement on the site, one surely exists in the vicinity. The Late Bronze Age evidence is intriguing and inconclusive; the macrobotanicals for example, are poor and can shed little light on subsistence strategies. It seems highly likely that the ditch and pit held some special or ritual purpose. (information summarised from source) (2-3)
