Early Iron Age pits, 10 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep, were found in 1938 when the cliff was cut back to accommodate a shelter. The infilling comprised a large quantity of pottery fragments, some showing ornamentation, and several bases of Swarling-Aylesford type pedestal urns, daub with wattle compress and bones. A small oblong stone trough from the site, in Margate Public Library (b), is considered by J.P.T Burchell to be a salt evaporating vessel. Find spot at TR 32077027 pointed out by Miss D.E Swinford (c) formerly of Waterside, nearby, who first reported the site. (1,2) TR 321704 (Sited to nearest 50 m) Iron Age remains found in cliff face.
