Full Description

Area B was a portion of the Grain-Shorne pipeline situated on a low hill immediately to the west of Upper Stoke excavated in 2009.

During the later 1st century and 2nd century AD the area was used as a cremation cemetery. Three cremations were recorded and it is thought possible that more exist to the south beyond the area investigated. One of the cremations, an adult, was placed in the lower portion of a Baetican (south Spanish) amphora. Five further vessels were placed beside the amphora: a stamped samian cup, two samian dishes (one stamped with BALBINUS.F and probably dating to AD 100-120), an unusual probably locally-produced flagon and a poppyhead beaker.

The second cremation was inserted into the backfilled Middle/Late Iron Age ditch, presumed to have been done deliberately, and the vessel used to contain the cremated remains of an adult dated to AD 40-100.

The third cremation, of an adult, was placed in the lower portion of an olive oil amphora, dating to AD 50-170. A tubular glass vessel with a flat base was also found.

Further down the slope two groups of postholes possibly formed a fenced trackway leading to the cremation cemetery. The postholes were large, up to 1.2m in diameter. They were cut by later Roman field ditches. (1-2)
