Between 2005 and 2007 Canterbury Archaeological trust carried out a watching brief. Between four and six buildings dating from the late 12th to early 13th century with pits to the rear of them were found in Lydd Road.

The buildings were probably demolished when Lydd Road was created as an extension to the High Street. The first building appears to have been short-lived. Pottery from this structure dated to between AD 1225 and 1400. Buildings 2, 3 and 4 had successive layers of levelling, clay floors and trampled occupation material. The final structure was of similar complexity. This building was apparently identified in an earlier phase of work in 2004. Pottery suggests that the height of occupation was between AD 1250 and 1325. The buildings were sealed below layers of later road metalling. (1)
