Full Description

In 2005 the Trust for Thanet Archaeology carried out an excavation At the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate. A Neolithic pit was found, it was a sub rectangular cut measuring 0.7m by 0.8m with a steep sided profile and an irregular stepped flat base. The pit was filled with a fine silty clay with some chalk silt towards the base. Worked flints and sherd of Neolithic pottery were found within the fill, small amounts of wheat and other cereals were contained within the deposit. The flintwork could be divided into two groups based on patination. The characteristics of the earlier, more heavily patinated group indicated that they could be residual Mesolithic pieces. The characteristic technology of both groups were similar, perhaps indicating continuity between the activities carried out on the site in these two periods. (1-3)
