Full Description
In 2010 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluation. Evidence was found of a Romano-British farmstead. A few residual sherds of Late Iron Age pottery suggest that activity might have started earlier but features found were of Roman date. An enclosure was set out on the slightly higher ground above an now silted creek. The enclosure appears to be square or rectangular and at least 20m x 25m. Post holes and gullies within the enclosure could relate to buildings. A pit was found containing crop processing waste. A shell midden was also found. This activity is likely to have dated to the mid or late 2nd century through to the 4th century. A wooden stake was recovered from a waterlogged deposit and could be of Roman date. (1)
