Full Description
In 2000/1 the Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out a targeted watching brief (a strip, map and sample excavation) ahead of CTRL works. In the Late Bronze Age a northwest-southeast aligned co-axial field system was laid out over the northern part of the site. It truncated the Middle to Late Bronze Age settlement activity. Only one sherd of Late Bronze Age pottery was found in one of the ditches. Several other Late Bronze Age features were found along the boundaries of the field system. A pit contained Late Bronze Age pottery (as well as intrusive iron slag). Another pit contained charcoal which produced a radiocarbon date of 1270-990 cal BC. A nearby pit contained charred plant remains, wheat, spelt and corn spurrey, and onion couch grass which produced a radiocarbon date of 1190-920 cal BC. (1-2)
