Full Description
In 2000/1 the Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out a targeted watching brief (a strip, map and sample excavation) ahead of CTRL works. An isolated pit was found containing three fills. The primary fill contained 200 hobnails, seven nails and nine nail shank fragments. The main fill of the feature contained pottery, 34 hobnails, 54 nails and four nail shanks, along with burnt bone, representing an unurned cremation of a probable adult male. Charcoal from this deposit was radiocarbon dated to AD 220-420. The final fill contained pottery dated to AD 120-220. This assemblage had been interpreted as the pyre remains of a cremation that took place in the mid Roman period. (1-2)
