Full Description

Gravesend, Rosherville and Northfleet Tramways, later the Gravesend and Northfleet Electric Tramways. Opened in 1883 and was initially a horse drawn service, between the centre of Gravesend and the Olde Leather Bottel Northfleet. Electric traction arrived with an experimental electric system in 1889, including an extension to Northfleet High Street. This system, utilising an underside pick-up arrangement with leather sealing flaps was not a success, and the system reverted to horse tractihttps://hbsmrdocumentation.esdm.co.uk/on in 1890. it was electrified in 1901 when it became the Gravesend and Northfleet Electric Tramways. Services started on 2 August 1902 with a route from Galley Hill, Swanscombe to Denton. In 1903 New tram routes opened from Pelham Road to Perry Street, Windmill Street to Old Road and a connection to the Leather Bottle, Northfleet. Double deck trams with both driver and conductor were provided, services being managed by Gravesend and Northfleet Electric Tramways Ltd from a new tram depot constructed off Dover Road. This electric tramway only operated for only 26 years before the system closed for good in 1929. (1-3)
