Monument record TR 26 NE 1192 - Cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosures, to the south of Down Barton, St Nicholas at Wade

Rectilinear enclosures visible as cropmarks in Google Earth image of 2007, to the south of Down Barton, St Nicholas at Wade. It covers an area of 15m by 40m and consists a rectangular crop mark with an opening towards the south side. (1)

An enclosure forming part of a settlement of Medieval date was visible as a cropmark in NMR 26981/33 01-JUN-2011. This feature was mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. Right-angled ditches form three side of the enclosed area, which contains three small pits visible in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 14-APR-2015. (2-3)

NRHE data records some of the cropmarks as part of a rectilinear enclosure located at TR 2563 6615 at the western edge of Thanet where the land just begins to rise out of the marshy ground. Only the southern portion of the rectilinear enclosure is visible at the edge of a modern field. A wide terminally defined entrance occupies most of the south-western half of the southern side. Two curved corners and parts of the south-western and north-eastern sides are also visible. (4)
