Full Description
Rectilinear enclosures visible as a cropmark in Google Earth image 2007 to the north east of Upper Hale Court.
It is 30m by 77m. The south eastern corner is curved and the north western corner extends outward to the north. The western side is interrupted but a south turning corner is visible from the north western corner (1).
The cropmark remains of part of a possible Iron Age, Roman or perhaps medieval settlement enclosure and pits with traces of a large ditch-defined field system extending to the north, south and east are visible on Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 21-APR-2007 aerial photographs. The settlement enclosure apperas to have traces of internal divisions, pits and an external enclosure attached to the north. It measures c.65m long with slightly convex sides and curved corners. The western side is not visible. At the north-western end of the site the cropmark traces of part of a trackway can be seen curving around to the north for c.110m, possibly associated with the settlement.
Further fragments of rectilinear enclosure to the east (MKE124093) may be associated with this settlement and field system. The eastern extent of the fragmented field system extends into the site of a Roman villa and its fragmented field system (TR 26 NE 71/MKE6401) which lie on a slightly different orientation, but are similar in form and field dimension.
These remains were mapped as part of the Historic England Thanet Landscape Mapping Project 2024. (2)
