Full Description

In 2006/7 Canterbury Archaeological Trust undertook an archaeological watching and recording brief at Barton Court School, Canterbury.
Three features identified as narrow post-holes were revealed in Trench 3; these suggest a structure of some sort. Four pits were also located, these were possibly used as storage or rubbish pits. One pit contained a fragment of late Anglo-Saxon pottery (c.AD850-1050). The similiarity of the infill deposits between these seven features suggest that they are all of a similar date. It is likely these features relate to agricultural activities undertaken on an estate held under tenancy by St. Augustine's Abbey since the early seventh century. (1)
