Full Description
During the East Kent Access Route excavations (2010-2011) a horseshoe-shaped ditch was discovered This early Bronze Age monument occupied a slight knoll (at 6.9mOD) on the Ebbsfleet peninsula. It comprised an outer penannular ditch which surrounded a small ring ditch with a shallow pit in the centre. The inner ring ditch may have been the earlier feature with the outer penannular ditch added later, but this cannot be demonstrated though both elements are of a likely early Bronze Age date.
The inner ditch had a diameter of 8m and was up to 1m wide and 1m deep. A very small quantity of late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age pottery and worked flint was recovered from the lowest fill. After it had silted this ditch appears to have been re cut by another shallow ditch which may have been segmented. An oval pit was located in the centre of the ring ditch, this contained some worked and burnt flint. The outer penannular ditch had an internal diameter of 20m and a north west facing entrance that measured 16m between the two terminals. The ditch had apparently been allowed to silt up naturally. The nature of the fills suggest the presence of a internal bank or mound. There were some sherds of Roman pottery in the upper fills which indicates that the outer ditch survived as a shallow earthwork in this period. There may have been two phases of outer ditch, the latest represented by a shallow re cut. The finds included a small assemblage of Bronze Age pottery and worked flint.
The location of the site, on a low peninsula surrounded by water to the west and west, would have made the site very visible. (1)
