Full Description
Excavations by Canterbury Archaeological Trust between 1978 and 1979 in Linacre Gardens located the remains of a small rectangular shaped building that had been constructed over the former Norman Boundary wall of the Priory, immediately north of the Meister Omers Hall during the late 15th century.
The building was originally over two storeys, constructed of mortared flints on a flint and chalk foundation, rectangular shaped measuring some 20 feet in length E-W by 12 feet wide N-S. Its western wall being an original 12th century Priory wall. It had a hard white mortar floor and a probable doorway in its north wall, towards the west end. It is likely that this building was the undercroft of the chapel mentioned in the Distribution Document of 1546, when the structure formed part of the occupancy of John daniel the Eleventh Stall (cannon) of the Cathedral, and a letter of 1661. The chapel itself being on the first floor, which connected to a building of the same date immediately to the west.
Later, during the post Dissolution period, the undercroft of the former chapel was partitioned, and two re-brick built garderobe were constructed either side of the partition and a drain added. During the mid 17th century many of the buildings were demolished and the area became a garden.
