Full Description
Zone 6 produced the biggest assemblage of Neolithic flint with re touched material accounting for 7% of the total flint assemblage and of that 7%, 38% were scrapers though only one of these was securely dated in a Neolithic pit. The distribution of the Neolithic flint may suggest that activity was centred less on the summit of Ebbsfleet Hill than around the lower, more sheltered ground. Worked flints were more prevalent around the lower slopes of the hill coincidental with the colluvium which undoubtedly migrated down from the upper slopes. In addition to the knapping waste assemblages which were discovered in features across this zone, this area also produced a number of fragments of polished axe as well as a more complete polished axe with a broken blade which came from a tree throw hole and an additional axe rough out which was found in the fill of a late Iron Age ditch.
