Full Description
Two sets of early Bronze Age double ring ditches were discovered within Zone 8 of the East Kent Access excavations. They occupied the brow of Cottington Hill and would have been clearly visible from the south. The sets were adjacent to each other and likely represent barrows. The southern had an internal diameter of approximately 17m, a depth of up to 0.8m. the fills appear to have derived from natural silting apart from one charcoal rich fill which represents a cremation deposit. The internal ditch had an internal diameter of 13m and was approximately equidistant from the outer one, though it was narrower and less deep. There was no evidence for any central mound within the inner ditch and though several pits were revealed no graves were identified. (information summarised from source)(1)
