Monument record TR 15 NE 1418 - Prehistoric Ditches & Timber Structures (Mint Yard)

Summary

The earliest layers were peat and river silts containing late Iron Age and early Roman pottery, possibly accumulated when this area was marsh or water meadow. A number of 'v'-shaped ditches and timber 'piles' of early Roman date were found, suggesting attempts to drain the land.

Full Description

In 1979 the Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated within the Mint Yard of Christ Church Priory in advance of the construction of a new structure for the King's School. The sitecode was MY79.

The earliest layers were peat and river silts containing late Iron Age and early Roman pottery, possibly accumulated when this area was marsh or water meadow. A number of 'v'-shaped ditches and timber 'piles' of early Roman date were found, suggesting attempts to drain the land. A road had been laid in the last quarter of 1st century, it was aligned NW/SE and overlay a number of deposits that seem to have been deliberately laid prior to its construction.
