Full Description

Anglo-Saxon pit context 260. The only context representing Period 7 (c.700-850). No other levels could be assigned to this period, but some of the 'dark earth' and loam deposits may be of this date.

Pit 260 was a large oval shaped pit with heavily weathered edges. This pit, no bottomed, was excavated to a depth if 1.1m. The lowest excavated fill consisted of redeposited gravel, possibly derived from the foundation of a Roman flint-and-mortar wall, and pale to mid brown stickly loam. This was overlaid by a mid brown fine loam containing lenses of burnt daub, charcoal lumps and a few oyster shells. The final backfill/levelling was of Period 9 data containing sherds dated to c.1050-1100.
