Monument record TR 15 NW 2137 - Roman Ditch, A2 Bypass/Queens Avenue
Summary
During the construction of the A2 By-pass in 1961 Frank Jenkins observed and measured what appeared to be a Roman Ditch. The filling contained a few fragments of pottery which seems to be Roman, a few pieces of burnt clay and small nodules of iron slag. It is possible that it was back-filled in Roman times but it could have been created in pre-Roman times. Its position on the crest of the slope suggests that it was a defence work of some kind.
