Summary

A Roman cobbled surface was uncovered as well as at least two pits. One of the pits contained Samian ware dating to late 1st century-early 2nd century AD and a quantity of hammerscale suggestive of industrial activity.

Full Description

In 1999 The Canterbury Archaeological Trust excavated at 5 Wincheap following a chance observation of a works trench by a member of the Trust. The trench was located within the angle of the building, on the outside and the sitecode was 5WC99.

A Roman cobbled surface was uncovered as well as at least two pits. One of the pits contained Samian ware dating to late 1st century-early 2nd century AD and a quantity of hammerscale suggestive of industrial activity.
