Full Description

In December 1947 The Canterbury Excavation Committee dug two trenches on the sites of the current 10 and 12 St George's Street, the trenches were coded CXI O and P.
In Trench O six pits were excavated, three were found to be Roman. Pottery, tile, shell and a coin were found. The other three pits yielded Saxon pottery.
The brick walls of the cellar rested on flint footing, but it was uncertain whether the two were of different dates.
Five more pits were excavated in Trench P, three were found to be Roman and finds included iron slag and lumps of Kentish Ragstone. One of the other pits was possibly Saxon, maybe a cellar, whilst the last pit yielded Medieval pottery sherds.
