Summary
Two trenches were excavated and all but the rear face of the Medieval city wall, of chalk block construction, built c. 1370-1380 was exposed on the frontage of this property. A sequence of ditches cut in front of the city wall was excavated. These contained alluvial deposits indicating that the defensive ditch in this area may have been a 'moat'.

Full Description
An excavation was undertaken by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust at 20 St Radigund's Street in 1983. Two trenches were excavated and all but the rear face of the Medieval city wall, of chalk block construction, built c. 1370-1380 was exposed on the frontage of this property. A sequence of ditches cut in front of the city wall was excavated. These contained alluvial deposits indicating that the defensive ditch in this area may have been a 'moat'.
