Full Description

In 1944 The Canterbury Excavation Committee investigated an area of bomb-damaged land at the junction of St George's Street and Burgate Lane, called site I and II and now 41 St George's Street. The cellar west of Burgate Lane was fully trenched and across the cellarless ground east of the lane a section was cut at a right angle to the line to the line of the Medieval town wall. In the cellar undisturbed ground lay c.10-20cm below the floor and c.2.44m below the present road level. Seven Roman pits and lengths of a gully were found. The latter was thought to be drain and was cut at either end by Medieval pits.

Over 21 Medieval pits were seen, cut for the purpose of dumping rubbish. The pits themselves had been cut by later cellar making. Two of the pits may have been trenches with parallel almost perpendicular sides and square ends. Other features included a hearth and two post holes.

Site II was dug in order to test the Roman defences; the trench ran at a right angle to the town wall across undisturbed cellars and was 6.4m long. The trench revealed, to the north, a bank of clay, a rubbish pit and the Medieval wall, the old turf line was visible beneath the wall.
