Full Description
During work to the main drainage system of Canterbury in 1868 the city engineer, James Pilbrow, observed a major Roman Street. The street was aligned at a slight tangent to the service trench and lay 1.22m below the street surface. At the south end of Castle Street the outer bailey ditch and a 2.8m wide wall of the medieval Canterbury Castle were located. The medieval city wall and ditch were also cut through. A large block of stone with complex moulding, possibly originating from the medieval Worthgate was located in this ditch.
