Full Description
Excavation was undertaken in the basement of the site of 47 Burgate and on high ground to the rear of the premises during 1946-7 by CEC.
Excavations were also undertaken from road level behind the basement (in Burgate?) the main features seen were the footings and walls of a substantial late medieval building. These overlay and cut into a curious structure of concreted gravel about 1.83m deep and interpreted as the footings of a building of Roman date. It was cut by medieval pits, a well, and a medieval basement.
Twelfth century layers lay directly on the latest Roman levels indicating that the site may have been completely levelled in medieval times. Elements of a medieval undercrofted structure were located. Urry suggests that this may be part of a building owned by Theoric the goldsmith, c1200. (1-2)
