Full Description
In April and August 1953 the cellar and grounds of no. 44 Watling Street were investigated by the Canterbury Excavation Committee. This site lay south of the street opposite Lady Huntingdon's Chapel and the trenches were coded C XXIII-C XXIV L.
Roman Watling Street was found, and to the south of it a timber framed building. The street had clearly been closed or diverted during the second century when the entire width of the first three surfaces of metalling was overlaid by an opus Signinum floor; this was associated with a timber sleeper-beam trench and must have been part of a building. The building was later demolished and Watling Street resumed its earlier course.
Five medieval pits were also revealed and excavated within the cellar and garden.
