Landscape record TR 35 SE 115 - Walmer Castle gardens
Summary
The formal and ornamental gardens to Walmer Castle. The gardens were extended and improved by William Pitt from 1792-1806 and Lady Hester Stanhope from 1803-06. Further planting took place during the 1860s by William Masters. The castle moat was extensively planted ornamentally during the second half of the 19th century on the advice of George Devey, but most of this had been removed by 1937. Replanting took place after the Second World War and after 1980. There is also a garden designed by Penelope Hobhouse in 1997 as a gift from English Heritage commemorating the 95th birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
