Full Description

During the period 1100-1400 a narrow metalled lane ran east-west across the site, north of which a substantial masonry building was built on the site of an earlier timber structure. It was argued that this may have been a predecessor of later churches on the site (St Mary Bredin). South of the lane was a cluster of pits in a hollow, whilst further to the south were a number of pits to the rear of properties fronting Watling Street. Between 1400 and 1550 the walls of the masonry building were removed and the pit complex in the southern corner of the site was recut, otherwise there was little activity. In 1625 the fine town-house that is now No 16. Watling Street was constructed, and a garden laid out to the rear with an enclosing brick wall. Garden soil was dumped over this area.
