Summary

A trench dug to receive a water pipe was found during an excavation at Payers Park in 2013. The finds include animal bone, ceramic building material, clay tobacco pipe, glass, slag and coal, iron nails/rivets, marine shell and pottery.

Full Description

An excavation took place at Payers Park in 2013 prior to redevelopment as new community park. The excavation was of a single trench which was 8m long and 2m wide. A water logged ditch was observed which contained water-pipe running from south-west to north-east. The pipe had a break in one of its joints. This pipe is dated to between 1840 and 1900. There were various finds in deposits in the trench, mostly Post-Medieval. These finds included iron nails, animal bone, marine shell, ceramic building material, glass, slag and coal, clay tobacco pipe prehistoric worked flint and a large assemblage of pottery. The excavation shows changes to construction of a series of water mills during the latter post-medieval period.
