Full Description

Excavations took place at No 8 Faversham Road in 2014 ahead of proposed development.
They revealed 2 post-medieval buildings and a post-medieval road-side ditch in association with various features including a small oven and a paved yard. (1)

These buildings were first uncovered and recorded in an archaeological evaluation by Canterbury Archaeological Trust by means of 3 trial trenches (smaller than the eventual excavation trenches) in 2014. (2)

The report summarised the findings as follows:
"The results identified a feature of moderate to high significance in Trench 2 that cut a layer of
preserved subsoil at a depth of 0.40m below the existing ground surface located along the northern
edge of the PDA. This consisted of a single large pit that contained charcoal, animal bone, weathered
Roman tile and a single sherd of early to middle Anglo-Saxon pottery. The feature may relate to low
scale Anglo-Saxon activity located within or near the PDA.
An east-west aligned ditch was revealed within Trench 1, but was undated. The evaluation identified
post-medieval activity including a small brick-built oven in Trench 2 that most likely represents small
scale industry. A large truncation event had reduced the ground level within the southern property
plot removing the subsoil horizon to just above the top of the natural geology. A late post-medieval
wall line was revealed that related to the plot boundary between properties that would have fronted
Faversham Road." (2)
