Full Description
An archaeological assessment including a walkover survey was carried out in Robin's Wood in 2014. A number of features all dated to the Post-Medieval period were observed. 2 Charcoal Hearths were observed within the extreme nort-west of the wood they are 8-10m in diameter and associated with nearby saw pits. Charcoal hearths are fragile so probably date from recent periods of iron production. 2 possible Saw pits were observed in the north-west corner of Robin's Wood and they are about 4m long and 3m wide and were used to process timber trees into planks. A numbe of pits and quarries were also observed ,probably dug for stone for local buildings. There are several other banks and ditches dating to the post-medieval period and represent old wood boundaries. (1)
