Full Description

An archaeological evaluation involving one trench took place in 2014. A number of Post-Medieval structures and finds were encountered dating to two phases, the 17th century and the 19th century. The 17th century phase consisted of a narrow brick wall believed to be a possible building. A large sub-rectangular pit was dug against the face of the brick wall. The finds from it included roof tile, demolition debris, clay pipe and pottery and ceramics including chinese porcelain. The pit could be contemporary with the wall or could be part of the 19th century phase.
The 19th century phase consists of a stretch of coursed brick wall extended the width of the trench and together with another area of bricks is believed to represent part of shallow basement. Two further walls were enountered, it is likely that they represent the north and south supporting walls of the east west orientated alleyway shown in the 1872 town plan. (1)
