Full Description
An archaeological evaluation took place in 2014 at the site of the proposed Tunstall Church of England Primary School, Sittingbourne. A prehistoric feature was excavated, it was 1.05m wide and 1.6m long. Two flint flakes of Mesolithic-Neolithic date were recovered from it. The narrow width was suggestive of a ditch but the feature may be the end of an oblong pit. A small group og prehistoric potsherds were recovered from the site. It is hard to give a specific date but the fines of the flint tempering suggest that the group is of Iron Age date. There was a moderate assemblage of flints recovered, with 45 pieces of struck flint. While only a broad Neolithic to Bronze Age date can be proposed for the majority of the assemblage, the two blade like flakes from the feature may be Mesolithic or Neolithic in date. Although the evidence suggests a wide range of prehistoric dates it does not indicate intensive use of the site in the prehistoric period. (1)
